Description of Major
Anthropology is the scientific study of humankind in relation to origins, physical characteristics, distribution, customs, languages, and social and religious beliefs and practices. Anthropologists study human societies and groups, reconstruct past cultures, and analyze the cultures and languages of all peoples, past and present. Both biological and cultural factors are examined as a basis for a better understanding of human history and behavior.

Prerequisite Coursework:
Two introductory courses in anthropology (ANT prefix).

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include: a minimum of six hours each in written communication, humanities, and natural science, and three hours each in history and mathematics. These should be completed as part of the general education/Liberal Studies program. In addition, students must be proficient in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.

Admission Requirements to Major Program of Studies
Students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with a minimum grade point average of 2.0, at least half the required Liberal Studies hours including English and mathematics, or an A.A. Degree.

Major Program of Studies at FSU:  32 hours
A grade of C- or higher is required in all courses to be counted toward the major.  No more than 9 hours of credit in ANT 4930 may be applied toward either the department's credit hour requirement for majors or the University's minimum credit hour requirement for graduation.

Four additional courses at the 4000 level (12 hours)
No more than 3 hours of work graded S/U, no more than 3 hours of field work courses, and no hours of DIS or S/U may be counted toward the fulfillment of the 4000 level requirement.
One Anthropology elective (3 hours).  May be taken at any level
 
Minor Coursework: 12 hours from one minor department, 15 hours from an interdepartmental minor, or requirements as stated by the minor area, in a related field.

Computer Skills Competency:  3 hours.  CGS 2060 (3), CGS 2064 (3), or CGS 2100 (3).

Oral Communication Competency:  0-3 hours
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly.  This requirement may be met through appropriate high school speech training or with an approved college-level course.

1. 60 hours must be earned at a senior institution.
2. The final 30 hours must be in residence at FSU.
3. A minimum of 40 hours must be earned at the 3000/4000 (junior/senior) level.
4. The B. A. Degree requires an additional 9 hours in the fields of history and humanities beyond Liberal Studies.
