Description of Major
Mathematics is a vital foundation for science, social science and technology. A student in mathematics can look forward professionally to employment in an industrial or financial firm, a governmental agency, or teaching in secondary, college or university institutions. Alternatively, a degree in the department can be regarded as the central component of a liberal education, either for its own sake or as preparation for professional study in another field. Biomedical mathematics is designed to prepare the student for admission to medical school.
Prerequisite Coursework: 24 hours
Students should complete the following prerequisites as possible during the first two years.
*COP XXXX (3) Computer Language (Pascal, FORTRAN, C, C+, or C++. COP 3014 Programming I or CGS 3406 C++ preferred.)
MAC X311 (4) Calculus with Analytic Geometry I
MAC X312 (4) Calculus with Analytic Geometry II
MAC X313 (4) Calculus with Analytic Geometry III (5 credits @ FSU)
*XXX XXXX (8) Two laboratory-based science courses for respective science majors with the prefix BSC, CHM, or PHY
*See major requirements before selecting courses to meet these prerequisites.
Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include: a minimum of six hours each in written communication, humanities, and natural science, and three hours each in history and mathematics. These should be completed as part of the general education/Liberal Studies program. In addition, students must be proficient in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.
Mapping
Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system. Academic progress is monitored
each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a
timely fashion. Transfer students must meet mapping guidelines to be accepted into their majors.
You may view the map for this major at

Admission Requirements to Major Program of Studies
Students desiring to major in mathematics and having completed with grades of C- or higher MAC 2311 and at least two other courses listed under “Prerequisite Coursework” will be designated as a mathematics major. A student who has accumulated more than five grades below “C-“ (including grades of “U”) in mathematics or computer sciences courses taken for college credit at FSU or elsewhere, whether repeated or not, will not be permitted to continue as a major in the department.
Major Program of Studies at FSU: 33 to 48 hours beyond prerequisites.
Courses at the 4000 level applied toward the degree must be taken at FSU unless specifically exempted by the Chair on written request. A C- or higher is required in all courses taken for the major.
The following courses, in addition to prerequisites listed above, are required of all majors: 10 hours.
MAP 2302 (3) Ordinary Differential Equations
MAS 3105 (4) Applied Linear Algebra
STA 4321 (3) Introduction to Mathematical Statistics
MAD 3703 (3) Numerical Analysis I or CXX XXXX (3) Course in C, C++, Fortran or another approved high-level programming language. (Not in total, as this is part of the prerequisites).
Mathematics majors must complete one of the following options: 23 to 38 hours
A. Mathematics: 23 hours
