Description of Major
The Art Education curriculum provides for the professional training of art teachers. Three tracks are available:
Certification - This program for educating art teachers combines information about art, the learning needs of children, and the development of self. Students completing this program qualify for Florida Teacher Certification in Art, K-12. Most students pursue this track.
Pre Art Therapy - This track has been designed to prepare teachers of art to work with special populations in the public schools or other settings. Emphasis is placed on expanded awareness of special populations and expressive techniques in art. Students in this track are expected to complete teacher certification requirements. Contact the department for additional requirements for this track.
Community Service – this track is for students who are interested in community service and the arts, including museums, art centers, or other settings. Students in this track are expected to complete teacher certification requirements. In lieu of student teaching, students conduct a full-time internship in a community arts organization and, therefore, do not qualify for Florida Teacher Certification in Art.
