Description of Major
The Department of Classical Languages, Literature, and Civilization offers major programs in Classical Archaeology, Classical Civilization, Greek and Latin for students desiring specialized study. Emphasis in all courses is on critical thinking and analysis coupled with effective speaking and writing skills. Students who major in Classics regularly pursue careers in business, education, government, law, and other fields that require a broad liberal arts background. A joint major in Classics and Religion is also offered.

Prerequisite Coursework:
An approved language or a demonstration of proficiency by testing or completion of intermediate level is required.  Although not required for admission to the program, it is recommended that students take the lower level courses during the freshman and sophomore years. 

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include:  a minimum of six hours each in written communication, humanities, and natural science, and three hours each in history and mathematics. These should be completed as part of the general education/Liberal Studies program. In addition, students must complete a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level.  Contact department regarding appropriate language to meet this requirement.

Admission Requirements to Major Program of Studies
Students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with a minimum grade point average of 2.0, at least half the required Liberal Studies hours including English and mathematics, or an A.A. Degree.

Mapping
Mapping is FSU’s academic advising and monitoring system.  Academic progress is monitored each Fall and Spring semester to ensure that students are on course to earn their degree in a timely fashion.  Transfer students must meet mapping guidelines to be accepted into their majors.   You may view the map for this major at

Major Program of Studies at FSU:  24 to 45 hours, depending on option selected

All Latin and Greek language courses are in addition to the University's foreign language requirement. Choose one of the following major emphases. Coursework must be completed with grades of C or higher.
Classics Program A: Latin and Greek (30 hours)
Thirty hours in Latin and Greek, chosen in consultation with the departmental advisor. At least 12 hours are required in each language. The student must take 4000 level courses in at least one of the languages.
Classics Program B: Classical Civilization (30 hours)
 Thirty hours in Classical Civilization, Greek, or Latin. All work may be done in English translation, but language courses are strongly recommended as part of the program. Special emphasis may be placed on Classical Archeology, History or Literature, or the major may be in general Classical Civilization.
Classical Archeology (33 hours)
Fifteen hours in Classical Archaeology courses, twelve hours in Latin or Greek (in addition to the foreign language requirement) and six hours in Classics. Classical Archaeology courses must include ARH 3130 and three of the following advanced archeology courses: ARH 4110, 4118, 4120, 4131, 4151, and 4173.
Latin (24 hours)
Twenty-four hours in Latin above the 1000 level. Two courses at the 3000 level are required, including LNW 3211 and 4340r, along with six additional hours at the 4000 level.
Greek (30 hours)
Thirty hours in Greek. This program will normally include GRE 1120 and 1121.
Classics-Religion Joint Major (45 hours)
Forty-five hours with a minimum of 18 hours in each department. (Contact advisor for specifics.)

Minor:  12 hours in an approved minor field or 15 hours in an approved interdepartmental minor.  “Classics and Religion” majors do not need a minor.

Computer Skills Competency:  3 hours.  CGS 2060 (3), CGS 2064 (3), or CGS 2100 (3).

Oral Communication Competency:  0-3 hours
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly.  This requirement may be met through appropriate high school speech training or with an approved college-level course.

Remarks:
1. 60 hours must be earned at a senior institution.
2. The final 30 hours must be in residence at FSU.
3. A minimum of 40 hours must be earned at the 3000/4000 (junior/senior) level.
