Description of Major
Apparel design and technology graduates are found in every area of clothing manufacture from lingerie to sportswear to formal dress to functional apparel for men, women, and children. Designers generate attractive and functional solutions to design challenges whether it be a high fashion inaugural ball gown for the First Lady or garments for aeronautical pioneers living in a space station. The successful designer must be creative, consumer sensitive, technically competent, able to interface with production engineers and sales representatives, and business-savvy. Courses in the Apparel Design and Technology curriculum include content related to design principles, idea generation, fashion illustration, pattern making, computer aided design, product development, apparel assembly, merchandising principles, production technology, historical fashion, textiles, and quality evaluation. Supporting coursework in art or art history, economics, and psychology or sociology is also required. Professional electives allow students to build a specialization in a particular area of design. Internships are encouraged and are available on a competitive basis. Students are also encouraged to participate in design competitions, some of which carry monetary awards.
